5 Things I Wish I Knew As a College Freshman | College 101

2 min read

          As my undergrad comes to an end, I find myself reflecting back on all of things I did right, and all of the things I wrong since beginning college. College is all about the choices you make. Hopefully I can help prevent you from making some of the same mistake I did.

1. YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE IT ALL FIGURED OUT

       Okay, just being completely honest… college is hard. Classes can be overwhelming, and socializing can be difficult. It might seem as though  everyone else around you has life 100% figured out, but it’s okay if you don’t.

2. IT'S OKAY, TO NOT BE OKAY

       I can remember plenty of times during my college experience, where I genuinely felt lost and out of place. Life was stressful for a number of reasons, and I would find myself feeling ashamed for not being happy.  But I had to realize, it’s okay to not be okay sometimes.

3. LEARN TIME MANAGEMENT

      This is a lesson I’m still learning. Finding balance can be hard. Between socializing, going to class, socializing, doing homework, taking naps, socializing, and socializing; I don’t know how I survived. 😂🤦🏾‍♀️ My freshman year consisted of typing up last minute assignments, staying up til 4 A.M., rushing to classes, and a lot of13 minute naps 😴. Don’t make the same mistakes I did, manage your time wisely!!

4.BUDGET

     Whether you have a job or you’re surviving off of a weekly allowance, BUDGET! Prioritize your needs before you go bowling with your friends, or buy that shirt that’s super cute! If you’re anything like me then, money burns a hole in your pocket. So, do yourself a favor and create a monthly bucket. {Don’t worry, I have a post about budgeting coming soon}

     Oh, and don’t treat those refunds like pay day! Save the money, and put it towards something useful. Remember, you have to pay those loans off with interest.

5. DON'T BUY TEXTBOOKS FROM THE BOOKSTORE

        I probably spent about $500 on books my first semester of college. Yes, books are expensive… but before you run to that book store, check out Chegg.com, and Amazon.com. Paying for books out of pocket can be costly, but you will have saved so much money in the long run.
